Budburst Wine & Food Festival, 11-18th November, 2007
The
Macedon
Ranges is the coolest wine growing
district on the mainland.
Not only does this produce the
best sparkling wine in the country, perfect conditions for award winning pinot
noir and chardonnay, but it has attracted interesting characters and skilled
winemakers from far and wide to ply their trade and their art in gorgeous rural
settings.
What sets the
Macedon
Ranges apart from other regions is
the fact that most of the wineries are family owned and operated, offering small
batch vintages of amazing quality and refinement.
The Budburst Festival gives the
visitor the chance to taste these wines of limited edition, but also to explore
beautiful rural countryside, quaint heritage villages, the famous Hanging Rock,
Mt Macedon Regional Park, and open gardens that thrive in the unique climatic
conditions of the Macedon
Ranges.

Macedon Ranges Wine Regions
Macedon Ranges is home to a number of vineyards which are spread across a geographically diverse but picturesque wine growing region in Victoria, Australia. The wines produced across the region vary greatly but have one unifying feature they are largely produced in a high altitude cool to ultra-cool climate.
From the southern edge of the region the drier and milder conditions favor white and red table wines including Chardonnay, Semillon, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet varieties.
Over the Divide (Trentham, Mt Macedon to Mt William) the higher altitudes offers the coldest regional sites which suits Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This area produces some of the finest sparkling wines in Australia.
Small areas of Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc are also featured along with more recent plantings of Pinot Gris and Riesling.
North of the Dividing Range up to the Northern boundary of the Macedon Ranges (bordering Bendigo and Heathcote) red wine varieties are more prevalent. The region's oldest Shiraz and cabernet plantings are located in this area and are quoted as the birthplace of the peppery Shiraz. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are also found in the northern region and are used in premium red and white table wines.
